Totally HATED the evil Lion Tamer, a multi-layered character with complex motivations, unlike the despicable… oh FORGET IT! I give up. WOW! I don’t feel like a gullible moron at all! LOVED Hugo, Kevin and Colette, at least in the beginning, three freakishly innocent souls, but sadly very easily manipulated by their evil captors. A brief respite of apprehension takes place until a evil-natured Lion Tamer arrives at the Carnival and, against all possible odds, calamity strikes again.Īnother clever ruse! VFD doesn’t mean Very Fancy Doilies, or Village of Fowl Devotees, or Volunteers Fighting Disease, the real meaning of VDF is Valley of the Four Drafts. The disguised orphans then start working in the Freak House Wagon, and they befriend hunchback Hugo, ambidextrous Kevin and Colette the contortionist. After leaving Heimlich Hospital and Hal the archivist behind, the self-sustaining Baudelaire travel to Caligari Carnival a remote location where they meet Madame Lulu, a totally legit know-it-all fortune-teller.

He's certainly annoying.Īnd this is what the author herself says about it: Preloved is a ghost story. The last thing she needs is to be haunted by someone only she can see. A best friend whose mood changes as dramatically as her hair colour. I think I should probably do less thinking and more reading.)įor reference, this is what Preloved is about (official-like blurb):Īmy has enough to deal with for one lifetime. (I am very serious about this, considering it is just a novel. It's the same when books are incredibly hyped - I expect a book to be awesome, and the odds of it not measuring up are much greater than if I'd just randomly selected a title off the shelf, for which I only have average expectations. I find out an author I love has a new book coming out, and I am excited! I read the blurb and see the cover, and I am even more excited because it sounds like exactly the kind of book I would love! I get my hands on aforementioned book! And then I stop. I am back! With a review! Oh, the wonderful things I have in store for you, internet-people who like reading my words! 5/10/2023 0 Comments The post american worldYet Zakaria mentions innovation only glancingly, never discussing some important points: that right after World War II, the United States was preeminent in the innovation game that in the next 63 years, know-how and resources were redistributed to other parts of the world and that today many countries are adopting distinct strategies to compete in that innovation game. For me, the value countries place on innovation directly relates to their place in the current world order. Not that I always agree with his analysis of globalization. He also entertains his readers: His droll description of Queen Victoria’s jubilee alone is worth the price of admission. He explains, for instance, how globalization’s increasing pace is evident in the growing percentage of non-American players in the U.S. But Zakaria adds much to the discussion with his unique perspective, which is informed by historical events, cultural and political studies, and current affairs-and also with his telling details. His call to action isn’t new it goes back as far as Alice Amsden’s 2001 book, The Rise of “the Rest”: Challenges to the West from Late Industrializing Economies. In his new book, Fareed Zakaria argues that to stay competitive, America needs to reconsider its global role now that other countries’ growing success is reshaping the world. 5/10/2023 0 Comments Hearts of Destiny by Kay DohertyNames, characters, places, and incidents are either the product of the author’s imagination or are used fictitiously. Collins’ father was determined to educate his children about military history, as a result of which, Collins grew up equipped to write about the political conflict in Catching Fire. Collins’ father’s career as an Air Force officer, military historian as well as a doctor of political science all helped her learn as much as she could about politics and war. This is reflected in Katniss’ craving for her father’s company after he passed away in a mining accident. As a young girl, she was exposed to the harsh realities of war, poverty, and starvation – all of which made it into the novel, Catching Fire.Ĭollins’ father served in the Vietnam war, during which time Collins felt an extreme sense of longing for him. Suzanne Collins was highly influenced by her father’s military career.
Like most of Frost’s poems, “Birches” used one type of figurative device, metaphor, in the poem to evoke mental images. This poem could reflect on World War I that robs and destroys children’s lives since Frost lived in the era of that war. And they, since they / Were not the one dead, turned to their affairs” to emphasize the reality that the ones not dead should continue to live. This speaker ends the poem with, “No more to build on there. The boy’s family needs to accept the reality that bad things happen randomly regardless of gender and age no one is to blame for the boy’s death. The young boy works as his responsibility to continue living in this world but ends up dying. With the same theme about reality and responsibility, “Out, Out”, is about a young boy who is forced to work at yard and eventually dies during his work. The speaker is forced to accept that reality, “But swinging doesn’t bend them down to stay / As ice storms do” (Lines 4-5). However, he needs to accept the reality that he is an adult and cannot leave his responsibility on earth. He wishes that he could swing on the birches as he did in his childhood and escape to heaven. The reality and responsibility themes appear in the poem “Birches.” Every time, the speaker sees the birches bend, he tends to think of a boy’s swinging on them. “The Themes of Reality and Responsibility in Birches by Robert Frost” 5/9/2023 0 Comments White fang illustratedPartially told from the perspective of the dogs, these stories gave London the opportunity to explore and predict how animals perceive our world.
